How do I import contacts from a CSV?

Bring contacts in from a spreadsheet or your mail app, map the columns, and skip duplicates.

Import contacts from any CSV file: a spreadsheet export, or the contacts export from your mail app.

Import

  1. Go to Network → Contacts and click Import.
  2. Choose a CSV file, or drop it in. Up to 2,000 rows at a time. The first row has to be the column names.
  3. Check where each column goes. Plya matches common names for you; set anything else to Skip.
  4. Click Preview. Check the first rows and any problems.
  5. Click Import N contacts.

When it's done, the toast offers Add to a pipeline, which puts everyone you just imported on an Outreach pipeline at once.

Not sure about the format? Click Download a sample CSV in the first step.

On Basic

Basic includes 50 contacts. When your file has more rows than you have room for, the preview says how many you have left, with two buttons:

  • Import the first N imports as many as fit. The dialog stays open and offers the rest.
  • Upgrade and import all opens the plan dialog, and imports everything once you upgrade.

If your studio already has more contacts than Basic includes, for example after a Studio plan ends, Import opens the over-limit prompt instead, with Archive down and Upgrade. See what the Basic plan includes.

Columns you can map

ColumnNotes
First name, Last name, Full nameMap First name or Full name, at least
Email, Phone, Title, Location, Website
OrganizationMatched to an existing organization by name, or created once
TagsSeparate several with commas or semicolons. New tags are added to your tag list. A Google Contacts export's labels come in as tags, without Google's own "My contacts" group
Leadlead, true, yes, y, 1 or x marks the row as a lead

Each field takes one column. When a file has several of one kind, like Google's "E-mail 1" and "E-mail 2", Plya picks the first and skips the columns that only name its kind, like "E-mail 1 - Label". An address on several lines is joined into one.

Duplicates and errors

  • Rows whose email is already in Network are skipped. Tick Import them anyway to bring them in too.
  • Rows that can't be imported are listed with the reason, such as "Row 12: Same email as row 4".
  • If some rows don't save, Plya tells you how many imported and lists the rest.

Organizations can't be imported from a CSV. Add them by hand, or let the Organization column create them.
