Launch deal: $18 for your first month, until Dec 5.

Less admin, more knitting.

Know who asked, what's due and who's paid. For people who make things around a day job. A friend's commission, a market weekend and the evenings in between go in one place, and Finance adds up what the small invoices bring in.

Free to start. No card needed.

Dana's sister Erin asks for a portrait of her dog. The sticky becomes a note, Erin becomes a contact, and her card's + makes the project, due Dec 12, and a $120 invoice. All four are linked on the board.

The admin that comes with making on the side

The making fits around a day job, and the money comes in small sums from many places: a market table, a friend's commission, a shop online. Nobody adds it up until the tax forms come.

  • Hobby or business?

The question lands with the tax forms. The IRS says no single thing decides it, and hobby income is reported either way, so it starts with knowing what came in.

  • "We can pay you!"

A friend of a friend asks for one and offers to pay, with no price and no date. People who don't make things tend to guess about $50 for anything handmade, which rarely covers the materials.

  • The receipts and the real number

Takings are often the only number a market seller tracks. The booth fees and materials sit in an envelope of receipts until the forms come.

  • What's left of your time and strength

Most people who make on the side do it in the evenings and on days off. The admin comes out of the same few hours as the making.

At the kitchen table

Give a friend's commission its own dates

A commission is a project with the friend linked as its client and a task for each stage: piece the top, quilt the rows, hand-stitch the binding. Each one has a date, so an evening at the machine starts on the next step.

Fit the week into two evenings and a Saturday

All tasks sorts what's due into Today, Upcoming and Later, so Tuesday night starts with the one thing that's next. Tick it off when it's done. Type a task in the quick add, give it Thursday's date, and it takes its place in Upcoming. An Upcoming task list card on your canvas shows the same week beside your work.

See what the year's small invoices add up to

Each commission gets its own invoice, paid by card on its pay page or marked paid when you're handed cash. Collected 2026 at the top of Finance adds up every invoice paid this year. It counts Plya invoices only, so market cash and shop sales aren't in it.

Tools for a year of making on the side

The tax forms, the markets, the holiday applications and the gift commissions come around every year. Each one has a place in Plya.

  1. January to February

    The forms arrive

Any 1099-Ks arrive in the US, and UK Self Assessment is due January 31. Last year's invoices are in Finance month by month, each with the day it was paid.

  2. March to April

    A new pile of receipts

The UK tax year ends April 5. Start a receipts note for the new year, and paste in a photo of each receipt the night you get it.

  3. May to June

    Spring markets

The people who asked for your card at the spring markets go in Network, with a note of what they asked about.

  4. July to August

    Holiday market applications

Holiday markets open applications in July, and most close by early September. Each market is a target on a Fairs & events pipeline, with the date you expect to hear back.

  5. September to October

    Stock for the holidays

Making stock for the holiday markets runs a task a night. Date each one, and Today lists what's next when you get home from work.

  6. November to December

    Gift commissions

Every gift commission is a project linked to the person who asked, with the date it has to be ready. Its card on the Projects page turns amber two weeks out.

Keep the year's receipts in one note

Start a Receipts 2026 note. The night you get home from a market, paste in a photo of each receipt and type the booth fee and the mileage under it. Search finds them by what you typed, and the note downloads as a PDF for whoever does your taxes.
