Open calls, fairs and grants for furniture

A commission is a project. Its stages, from rough milling to delivery, are tasks you date once the deposit lands, and each milestone payment is its own invoice, drafted when the milestone comes.

The admin that comes with commission work

The lead time starts at the deposit. Twelve to sixteen weeks from receipt of deposit is the published norm, a late approval on the drawings pushes the delivery date, and the client asks how it's going at week six.

  • The estimate that was wrong by a third

Every table takes longer than the bid. The bid is in a spreadsheet, the shop hours are in your head, and nobody adds them up until the balance goes out.

  • The change order nobody wrote down

Breadboard ends, asked for in passing at the dry fit. Writing it up feels like more work than the change, so it goes on no invoice, and the delivery date slips anyway.

  • The balance you chase after delivery

The table is in their dining room. The last 10% is held over a missing part, or until the homeowner pays the designer.

  • The designer who wants a trade price, a fee and COM

A trade discount, fifteen percent for their trouble, and the client's own fabric on the chairs, with the lead time waiting until it arrives. Each studio's terms are different and live in an old email.

At the bench

Know which piece is at which stage

Each commission's steps sit on its project, from shaping the legs to the third coat of oil. Today shows what's due this week across every job, so the next thing on the bench is already decided.

Add change orders to the invoice as they come in

When a client asks for a change, add it to the balance invoice as a line with its price, give it a task with its own date, and keep their message in a note on the commission. Move the project's delivery date in the same sitting, so the new date is on record before the first board for it is cut.

How invoices work

Keep each design studio's terms and projects together

An interior design studio is an organization in Network, with its people and its trade terms in one place: the discount, net 15 on the first job, whose fabric goes on the chairs. Every project it brings you is linked to its record, and a dated task says when to check in next.

How network works

Tools for the full furniture maker's year

Markets, design weeks and craft-show juries come around every year. Each one has a place in Plya.

  1. January to February

    American Craft Made Baltimore

A show is a project: the pieces to finish before load-in, the crating list in a note, and the dates to drive down in February.

  2. March to April

    High Point and the Smithsonian

The spring market and the Smithsonian Craft Show both land in April. The designers and showroom buyers you meet go in Network with the studio they work for.

  3. May to June

    ICFF and the show calls

ICFF fills New York in May through 2026 and joins BDNY in November from 2027. ACC Baltimore closes applications in late May or early June, the Smithsonian in mid-September. Opportunities lists the calls with their deadlines and fees.

  4. July to August

    Booking December

At twelve to sixteen weeks from deposit, a December delivery is booked by late summer. Each commission's tasks and delivery date sit on its project, and Tasks lists what's coming due across every job.

  5. September to October

    Fall High Point

Pitch showrooms and design studios before the October market. Each one sits on a pipeline with its next follow-up date.

  6. November to December

    PMA, Design Miami and delivery

The PMA Craft Show in November, Design Miami in the first week of December, and the holiday deliveries between them. Each balance goes out on delivery, and Finance shows what's paid and what's overdue.

Keep the cut list with the commission

A note in Plya holds the cut list, the finish schedule and the photos of the boards you picked, with checklists and images, linked to the commission it's for. The walnut you set aside in March sits one click from the table it becomes, and the client is one click further.
